San Diego, CA - Mechanical heart-valve pioneer DonaldControl Valves Shiley, who with Swedish surgeon Viking Bjork developed a prosthesis widely used for aortic- and mitral-valve replacement throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, died on July 31 after several years of poor health, according to news reports [1,2,3]. The Bjork-Shiley tilting-disk valve was manufactured and sold byCryogenic Valves Shiley's own company until its purchase by Pfizer in 1979.
